With that popularity comes responsibility. Safety is one of the core priorities of Dog Park Friends Carmichael. Our committee works to identify concerns, listen to regular park users and support practical improvements that can make the dog park safer, more comfortable and more welcoming.

Safety Starts With the Space

Not every safety issue can be solved with a sign or a rule.

The physical design of a dog park plays an important role in how dogs and people move through it, interact with one another and respond when something unexpected happens. That is why Dog Park Friends looks at the park as a whole — from fencing and gates to seating, surfaces, visibility and the separation of different play areas.

Some of the areas we may advocate for or help support include:

• Strong, secure fencing and gates
• Better separation between large- and small-dog areas
• Improvements that help reduce fence-running and barrier frustration
• Clearer large-dog and small-dog identification
• Improved rules, directional and safety signage
• Better visibility throughout the park
• Safe walking and standing surfaces
• Additional seating placed with safety and visibility in mind
• Safe entry and exit areas
• Other improvements identified by park users and the Carmichael Recreation and Park District

The people who use the Carmichael Dog Park regularly are often the first to notice when something changes.

A loose section of fencing. A gate that isn’t closing correctly. A recurring problem area. A damaged surface. A location where dogs repeatedly become overstimulated. Or simply an idea that could make the park work better.

We want to hear about it.

Dog Park Friends gives dog park users an organized way to share non-emergency maintenance observations and improvement ideas. When appropriate, our committee can help communicate recurring concerns to the Carmichael Recreation and Park District and advocate for possible solutions.

Dog Park Friends Carmichael does not operate or maintain the Carmichael Dog Park. Maintenance, enforcement and operational decisions remain under the authority of the Carmichael Recreation and Park District and other appropriate public agencies.

For Emergencies & Immediate Safety Concerns

Some situations should not wait for a committee report.

For emergencies, call 911. For non-emergency law-enforcement concerns, CRPD directs park users to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s non-emergency line. Carmichael Park also has a non-emergency contact through Sacramento Protective Services. (Carmichael Park)

Dog Park Friends’ reporting form should be used for improvement ideas, not emergencies or situations requiring immediate response.

Safer Play Is a Community Effort

A safe dog park isn’t created by infrastructure alone.

The best experience happens when dog owners pay attention, communicate with one another and understand that not every dog plays the same way.

Dog Park Friends supports a culture of responsible, respectful dog park use,  where owners remain engaged with their dogs, recognize when play needs a break and help create an environment where everyone can enjoy the park.

That means looking out for your own dog while also being considerate of the dogs and people around you.

Know Your Dog

You know your dog better than anyone.

Before entering an off-leash environment, consider your dog’s comfort level, energy, play style and ability to interact appropriately with unfamiliar dogs.

During your visit:

• Keep an eye on your dog instead of assuming everything is fine.
• Pay attention to changes in body language or play intensity.
• Give your dog a break when excitement begins escalating.
• Be prepared to leave if your dog becomes overwhelmed or uncomfortable.
• Don’t force interactions between dogs.
• Respect another owner’s decision to create space.
• Keep entry and exit areas clear whenever possible.
• Help maintain a clean park by picking up after your dog.

The goal isn’t perfect behavior. It’s attentive ownership and good judgment.

From Concern to Improvement

Here’s How Dog Park Friends Helps

1. Identify

We look for recurring concerns, potential safety improvements and opportunities to make the park function better.

2. Communicate

We work with the Carmichael Parks Foundation and Carmichael Recreation and Park District to bring attention to appropriate issues and explore possible solutions.

3. Support

When an improvement is a good fit for charitable or community support, Dog Park Friends can help raise funds, recruit volunteers, seek sponsorships or build community support.

4. Follow Through

We want our supporters to see where their time and donations go, so we’ll share updates as projects move from idea to completion.
